Exterior Home Idea The Letter K Part 1

ASHTON RAGGATT MCDOUGALL

This house on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, was designed by Ashton Raggati McDougali for clients who wanted something challenging . ‘The owner weren’t afraid of new concepts. They embrace new ideas,’ says architect Howard Raggatt, one of those directors of ARM, who worked closely with project architect Sophie Cleland.

The owners, a couple with two grown children, had few requirements in their brief to the architects. There was a request for separation between adults and children as well as a separate study and generous bookshelves for the owners significant collection of books. Given carte blanche to experiment , ARM came up with the letter K as a possible form for new beach house. There are two parts to a design. One is to respond to a brief and the owners’ needs , together with looking at the site. The other is creating a strategy that will tease out some of the more complex ideas,’ says Raggatt.

ARM’s K house is more than the representation of an interesting letter in the alphabet; it a dynamic beach house , with easy access to the beach and shaped to shelter the owners from the wind.
